Where is the dollar heading? Why are the prices of everything going up while my wages are stagnating? Do deficits matter? Is the price of gold indicative of a market mania? Why is there so much fuss over the Fed?

Noticed a pay-per-use service on the Statistics Canada website entitled CANSIM. The socio-economic database is updated daily and provides fast and easy access to a large range of statistics. Most of the information is for Canada but there are some US statistics as well. The charge is CDN$3.00 per data field. For personal interest I downloaded data for two parameters - Canadian M1 Money Supply and the Federal Debt.
There is a similar rise in the M1 money supply staring in 1994 which is approximately the same time when the US started to rapidly increase their M2 and M3.
In 2001, the federal net public debt was over $545 billion, equivalent to just over 50% of GDP. The cost of servicing that debt was about $45 billion, amounting to 26% of all government spending. In recent years, the Canadian government has been reducing the federal debt. Since 1997, the federal debt has been reduced by nearly 13%. Published on http://DollarDaze.org - May 29, 2007.
